Remembrance Sunday 2021

Clear blue skies, sunshine and the sound of birdsong filled the air of Sunday, 14th November, as a large crowd gathered together, overlooking the Llangunllo war memorial, for Remembrance Sunday 2021. A stark contrast from 2020, when this important and poignant day was commemorated from our own doorsteps, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Reverend Gareth Davidson, from Knighton, took the service for The Beacon Benefice and Gravel Chapel. After a welcome, prayers were said for all those we remember, who were lost during two World Wars, followed by the hymn, “O God, Our Help In Ages Past.” Representatives were then called forward to place wreaths at the cenotaph and read out the names of the fallen from Beguildy, Bleddfa, Gravel, Heyope and Llangunllo churches.

As the Flag Of Wales and the Union Flag hung high above the memorial, The Last Post echoed through the surrounding hills, skilfully played on the bugle by Theresa Head, just prior to 11.00 am. Reveille was sounded to herald the end of the 2 minutes silence, observed in respect for those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The second part of the service continued, afterwards, inside St Cynllo’s Church.
