Llangunllo D-Day 80th Anniversary

The sun came out and the weather was fine unlike D-Day 80 years previously. Folks from the local community and further a field came to Llangunllo Community Hall to enjoy an afternoon tea and remember those who served so valiantly on D-Day, June 6th, 1944.
Organised by Llangunllo & Bleddfa Community Council, everyone brought along a plate of food or a home made cake to be shared by all.

The afternoon began with a speech by Jonathan Protheroe welcoming everyone and this was followed by a few moments of reflection about D-Day. The film, ‘The Longest Day‘, which was about the D-Day events was shown on the screen and although muted, wartime songs played throughout from a CD player. The hall was decorated with bunting and flags of allied countries involved in the conflict.

While those present enjoyed their delicious afternoon tea there was time to take part in a D-Day quiz which the winner recieved a commemorative mug. Great fun for all.

A wide array of memorabilia was also on display which garnered a lot of interest from everyone attending. Ration books, medals, photographs, a local Home Guard display and a cap worn by a former resident of Llanbister Road, Bev Wilding, (Uncle to Chris Pugh), a stirrup pump, wartime fold up spade and a wind up air raid warning siren in full working order which proved to be great fun in these peaceful times. Also included was a genuine 1940 Royal Enfield WD 346CC motorbike that was used by the fire service in Rhayader.

A photographic portrait of King Charles III was sent to the Community Council and will be given a permanent place on the walls of Llangunllo Community Hall. A wonderful afternoon for both young and old to get together and remember all those who were involved in D-Day 80 years ago. Many thanks to Rebecca Twyman, Jonathan Protheroe and the Llangunllo Bleddfa Council and everyone who helped.
