At St Cynllo’s we gathered to give thanks for the many different kinds of fathers and father figures that have had such an influence now and in the past.
Humour was provided, on this occasion, by excerpts from “To Dad” – a book written by children as a gift for fathers everywhere. Many of the quotes raised smiles of recognition like the Dad who makes up the rules of Monopoly as he goes along, and the tall tale telling Dad who said that people had to unscrew their feet in order to put on drain pipe trousers. Then, of course, fathers are always right, and even if they’re not they are never actually wrong! It was agreed that Dads can be grumpy people, but good at heart and kind in a different way to mothers, and it is a good job someone invented them!
The story of the Prodigal Son was our scripture reading. We considered this father’s feelings, and reactions, as the story of his lost and recovered son unfolds and also the central message of love and forgiveness.
Small tokens of appreciation were distributed to the gentlemen and we were soon tucking into the usual bring and share tea as we caught up with all the local news.
