The Llangunllo Christmas Carol Service at St Cynllo’s Church was held on Christmas Eve at 3:00 pm. The church service was well attended and the theme for this year was ‘Christmas Through The Ages.’
To start the service, Dorothy and Mia Jones lit the candles on the Advent Ring.
Pam Livingstone-Lawn then began the introductions and asked the congregation to sing ‘O Come All Ye Faithful.’
THE MIDDLE AGES:
Local children acted out the story of ‘Good King Wenceslas’ with the help of Isabel Morris. The King was having a banquet when he heard of the poor man in the forest who was collecting wood. The Good King sent him food and drink from his own table.
TUDOR
A reading by Oz Kelly told of how important feasting and celebration was during Tudor Times. She then went on to introduce two local minstrels, Debbie and Trev Jones to sing and perform ‘The Coventry Carol.’
GEORGIAN
Maureen Joyce read the introduction to the Georgian period which included ‘The Christmas Story’ from St Luke chapter 2.
The congregation then sang the carol ‘While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks By Night.’
VICTORIAN
John Hannah, complete with Father Christmas hat, introduced the Victorian period. The children came forward to decorate the Christmas Tree while everyone sang ‘O Christmas Tree.’
INTO THE TWENTIETH CENTURY
Sion Deakins read the introduction which included the WW1 Christmas Day truce where German and British soldiers played a game of football and exchanged gifts. He then introduced Menna and Caroline Breeze who sang Silent Night in perfect harmony, while Menna played guitar.
After a short prayer, the final carol of the day was ‘Angels From The Realms of Glory.’ This was followed by the Christmas Blessing read by Pam.
After the service seasonal refreshments were served, including a glass of fizz, to wish all “Merry Christmas.”
Many thanks to Pam Livingstone-Lawn for taking a lovely service, organist Richard Lewis and all performers.
