The runners and (questionable) riders turned up at The Greyhound Inn, Llangunllo, on Sunday, 12th July, with their best hooves blacked, ready to sip at the trough, in preparation for The 2026 Pantomime Horse Derby.
The course was ready and laid out in the Lower Bailey field, by kind permission of Haydn Jones, and the going was good to firm on the flat and very warm & sunny!
A stream of spectators turned out to watch the old nags in action and contemplate their prospects of romping over the finishing line first, as the hayburners circled the parade ring and were introduced to the crowd by commentator, Phil Price.
The event began with one of 2 heats for the 5 horses in each race, prior to the final, which consisted of the 6 best qualifying competitors.
There was a break in proceedings for the riders who made it through their heats to catch their breath, while the best dressed horse was judged by Rosey Poole. The spoils for ‘Best In Show’ were awarded to ‘Ferndale Filly (Mark II)’ who was resplendent in blue velvet colours & owned by Sara Daniti and Terry Bushell.
The final race followed, which was closely fought and there was almost a stewards enquiry, when 2 horses fell on the first bend..but, did they fall, or were they pushed?! Ultimately, youth triumphed on the day and ‘The Football Lads,’ owned by James and Thomas Duggan, galloped over the line by just a head, to victory, to much mirth & cheering.
It was then time to file out of the race course, re-fill the empty glasses and collect some well-deserved nosebag in the form of beef burgers and hot dogs fresh from the barbecue and expertly prepared by Richard Lloyd, assisted by Phil Price.
The punters were able to relax and enjoy an outdoor open mic session, provided by local musicians back at The Greyhound, and the grand raffle draw took place with an array of excellent prizes. Many thanks to Chief Steward, Lawrie Stevens, the runners & riders, The Greyhound Inn and all who helped and attended to make the event a fun-filled day for all!
