Thanks for the Memory

As well as the usual lovely flower arrangements in St Cynllo’s for the May service there were jolly little bunches of forget-me-nots. As well as being much in evidence everywhere in gardens and hedgerows at this time of year they are, of course, the emblem of the Alzheimer’s Society which was founded 42 years ago this May.

We were treated to recollections of Llangunllo W.I. which, naturally, led to us singing ‘Jerusalem’. Stories about Llangunllo school also took us down Memory Lane and we sang the hymn ‘ Now thank we all Our God.’ which featured in the church services for both the opening and closing of the school.

‘The Darkening Green’ by Elizabeth Clarke provided a moving reading from the point of view of a farmer’s daughter who, on learning she is going blind, is writing a diary with details of what she sees and experiences before it is too late so that it can be read to her later so that those things can be recaptured in her mind.

The address considered importance of the many different aspects of memory in our lives and our prayers gave thanks as well remembering those who have to confront the reality of memory failing and those who offer support.

A donation was to be given to the Alzheimer’s Society.

As ever many thanks to all who helped to make the service and the following social time enjoyable and, dare I say – memorable!
