Llangunllo WI – February Painting Afternoon

Members met in the Village Hall for the February Meeting and ladies from the WI/Community “Knit and Natter” Group joined us to enjoy the speaker, Christine Williams, who demonstrated “Hot Wax Painting.”

Christine lives near Brecon and in her studio works with beeswax in a variety of colours, dyes imported from Holland, to create stunning images of landscapes, birds and flowers. She brought a selection of her work for us to view and purchase if wished.

Painting with beeswax goes back to ancient times and pictures in this medium were discovered in Tutankhamun’s Tomb.

She showed us how to create the colours and features with a travelling iron, a small heated brush and nib, just like a soldering iron, a “Black and Decker” drill head and knife. On completion the image is gently polished with a tissue. If the painting does not turn out as planned, the iron is used to return to the original background, and you simply begin again!

With Christine‘s guidance a numer of ladies were “hands on” and created super images of their own.

Hot Wax Painting was an excellent demonstration and we were all enthralled by the work of a very creative and talented artist.

Following a lovely afternoon tea with our guests, members dealt with the business at hand.

We plan to enter the County Show in April and interest was expressed in the PRFWI St David’s Day “Exploration of Welsh Crafts and Textiles” at Whitton Community Hall.

Members have voted on the 2026 NFWI Resolutions and wait to see which will go forward to the Online AGM in June.

A provisional date has been set for the Spring Community Lunch and we now look forward to our new programme beginning next month with our AGM. This will be held on Tuesday 3rd March, 7pm, at Malygoed and Rachael Storer will be joining us for decoupage box making – possibly pointing us in the right direction for the “Trinket Box” at the County Show?!!

If you would like to join us as a guest, or possible new member, just contact Isabel (Secretary) – 01547 550689/mramorris@btconnect.com
