A welcome calm after the storm and a glimmer of sunshine helped us to celebrate Easter morning at St Cynllo’s. The first sight to greet visitors as they came into church was a lovely arrangement of spring flowers by the font and a pretty Easter garden depicting the empty tomb – a scene that was then described in our first reading, and the hymn ‘Jesus Christ is Risen Today’ picked up the theme.
We looked back on the events of the first Holy Week and considered their impact on Christ’s followers at the time. We considered how the crucifixion could easily have been thought of as the end but how the risen Christ showed it was only the beginning – a new beginning which must have been seized eagerly, particularly by Peter after his thrice time denial of his friend and master.
The possibility of a fresh start is something we all feel the need of from time to time and as a symbol of that Easter Day is very powerful, especially for Christians, but Springtime is another, with the return of the sun, birth and re-growth all around us.
Robert Browning’s ‘Home Thoughts from Abroad’ reminded us most eloquently of just some of those seasonal pictures that he was yearning to see.
Our usual social time followed the service helped along by tasty food and convivial company and surrounded by beautiful flower arrangements – a grand chance to swap news of lambing progress, grandchildren’s achievements, Storm Dave and the inevitable health issues!
Many thanks to all involved in making this service a real celebration!!
