– they were the treat on Fathers’ Day in Llangunllo and it kept the youngsters well occupied at their usual table getting things ready to be given out at the end of the service.
As for the rest of us, we revisited some of our Fathers’ Day celebrations from previous years including a particularly memorable occasion when the front of the church was decked out as a carpenter’s workshop with Bob Williams, as Joseph, full of concerns for what was to become of his son, Jesus. Each service illustrated different aspects of fatherhood, and a little poem called ‘What makes a Dad’ then continued the theme.
The Bible reading was taken from the Sermon on the Mount during which Matthew constantly refers to God as our Father. In the address we thought about how, like our earthly fathers God loves and cares for us and sent Jesus to teach and guide us, much as our own Dads do. The Sermon on the Mount is full of those lessons and we looked at just a small part including the powerful passage about ‘loving your enemy’. Quite a challenge!
Of course, Jesus backed up his teaching by the way he acted and, in our prayers we asked for the grace to be able to follow that example more closely in our daily lives.
After the Dads had been given their doughnuts we all got stuck into the usual goodies and enjoyed a jolly, social time together.
